Tuesday, April 7th - Petra - possibly the most amazing place on earth that we've seen! (with mega pics!)

We visited Petra today. It was unbelievable. Jacqui, Julie and I were trying to figure where and when we had seen something more impressive in the world, and none of us had an answer. It was like going back in time, as soon as you started walking into the canyon. You could just feel the Nabataeans on their horses, more than 2500 years ago, or the romans driving in with their chariots in the early years AD. The "buildings" built in the rocks and the amount of detail that it had must have been really impressive back then, because it still is today. You can get an idea of Petra by looking at the pictures below, but you might also want to watch "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"; it was filmed (parts of) in Petra. We were really looking forward to this day, and our expectations were high, but it exceeded those by a mile. It was an amazing day, so worth the trip. Enjoy the pics!

Entrance to the canyon

Inside the canyon

So impressive to be down there

A statue must have been in that "window" at one point

Part of the old road (nabaterean or roman?), on the left

Rocks that look like an elephant

Part of an unfinished statue (blending in, I guess!)

The Treasury (its the name of the temple)

The way back out, through that little canyon

We got Jacqui and Julie, but where's Indiana Jones??

Stairs leading to ??

Another building on our way to the top of the mountain, towards the Monastery

Living spaces - over 2000 years old

Modern days, everywhere!

Collonnade street, with the temple behind it

For rent??

Stairs going up to the Monastery (one hour walk, uphill all the way)

The Monastery, on top of the mountain

No words needed!

On the way back down

The Treasury, in panoramic view

Entering the canyon to go back to the 21st century

From my I-phone: It's been a real good walk!
